Initial Proposal influence

I was drawn towards video gaming this semester as I currently have a keen interest in this area and would like to learn more about the industry for the potential to work in said industry. I began by looking into Resident Evils 7’s demo they released and found a couple of stills from the game, that I would use to build my idea.

The reason I decided to choose this demo was because I like the fact that it is a virtual space with its high attention to detail that makes it an interesting environment to have a look around. In addition to this, I like how the light reacts with its environment. For example, in the images, it shows the paths of light cutting through the dust and dirt in the air. Giving the environment a cinematic feel.

I don’t want to follow the abandoned house theme as I feel that this has been overdone to many times and has become too much of a cliche. In addition in keeping with media project 1, I plan on continuing the Sci-fi genre into this semester’s project. As this way, I am able to follow the whole production cycle right to the end outcome.

Another reason why this is an interesting project to undertake is the ability to create a virtual space that people can look round.

Introductory Lecture

As it was the first week back the session started with a breakdown of this semesters assessments and guidelines. This was useful as I was able to jot down all the deadlines and submission guidelines to keep my work focused and on track.

At the end of the lecture, we were asked to get our ideas ready for next week’s workshop where I need to pitch my idea in a concise manner whilst still getting the message through.

EARLY STAGES OF IDEA

I decided to build upon the skill I learnt last semester in 3D modelling and Texture painting. As my last semester work was targeted for use within film, I decided this semester to try and produce some work focusing in on the video game industry. I spoke with my tutor at the end of the lecture to see if this change in industry area would be a good idea. I also proposed the sort of work I wanted to create which is to create virtual space that can be walked around and has the ability to use a Virtual Reality Headset. My idea has been influenced heavily by the demo for the Resident Evil 7 which is featured entirely in an abandoned house.  I liked the idea of putting someone in a virtual space in which they can explore. I wanted to follow a similar theme but for sci-fi fiction so that there would continuity between my two-semester projects.  Jon’s feedback to me was that it was a good concept but that I needed to steer clear of the cliche’s in video games today. In addition to this was that I needed to make sure that it had a purpose or a narrative and that it needed to challenge my skills as this would be my final big piece of university work before I graduate and the piece that potential work will be assessed upon. This gave me a bit more of a focus for when it came to putting together my initial proposal pitch for Monday’s workshop.
